Increasingly, ERTH is bridging the gap between cultural and theatrical institutions by bringing physical theatre and puppetry to Museum environments. Successful roving and aerial performances have been individually written and delivered for The Australian Museum, Museum of Victoria (Melbourne), Old Parliament House, National Museum of Australia (Canberra), Auckland Museum (New Zealand), The Field Museum (Chicago), Natural History Museum (Los Angeles) and Minnesota Science Museum.

The Company is also in demand for corporate and commercial engagements. This can take the form of commissions, collaborations, consultations and direction of projects with and for other organisations. ERTH also undertake community workshops, cultural development projects and mentorships in many remote indigenous communities across Australia.

ERTHʼs design studio and workshop custom makes work for many clients. In the past, The Sydney Opera House, Sydney Festival, Sydney Olympic Games, the Department of Communications and the Arts, Centenary of Federation and Performing Lines have all had specialist creations produced from ERTHʼs busy studio and workshop.

Working out of the Myrtle Street Studios creative precinct in Sydney’s inner west, and Sydney’s contemporary arts centre, CarriageWorks, the company has a busy design and construction program incorporating the use of many non traditional set, prop, costume, inflatable and puppetry disciplines. In recent years ERTH has been embracing new technologies to introduce computer generated imagery and registered projection into its ever growing box of tricks.

Erth has received project funding from Arts NSW and the Australia Council.

Inspired by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Murder Ballads, theatre magicians Erth meditate on the violence staining our world and delve into our culture’s obsession with murder.

Welcome to the scene of the crime. A sinister yet compelling figure holds sway: interrogator, confessor and master of ceremonies, conjuring into life the figures of Nick Cave’s dark world of love, lust and death.

Created by Erth, Murder is inspired by Nick Cave’s Murder Ballad ‘Stagger Lee’. This dark, intimate theatrical encounter will attack you when you least expect it.

Keep your eyes peeled. Murder can happen anywhere.

The Dream of the Thylacine
An ode to hope when reality may be elusive.....

Based on the beautiful, illustrated children’s storybook by Ron Brooks and Margaret Wild, Erth brings to life the lost memories of the world’s last Tasmanian tiger.

In its research for this production, Erth toured Tasmania looking for clues, accounts and opinions that suggest not all hope is lost. Their findings are represented in imaginative projected images and live footage, creating a memorable world-premiere event that will inspire both doubters and dreamers.

I, Bunyip
‘The magic of our land revealed through the stories of our mysterious creatures’.

Erth launched their production “I, Bunyip” as part of the Sydney Children’s Festival 2011. A unique performance of puppets, visual effects and multi-media that takes audiences deep inside the mysterious heart of Australian imaginings with an inimitable cast of unique Australian characters brought to life on stage.

Children and adults are introduced to authentic stories, passed down in Indigenous communities for hundreds of years. Developed in consultation with five different Aboriginal communities around the country, I, Bunyip is a rare chance to meet very real characters from Australia’s oldest stories with one of the country’s most exciting performing arts companies.

Playfully named after the classic 1935 novel, I, Claudius by Robert Graves, the show seeks to record, explore and relate the stories of Indigenous groups that have never before been shared.

“Many people have shared European fables and fairytales to their kids. Of the Indigenous creatures that are of a similar ilk, there is a great misconception that these are mythological creatures, therefore they are perceived in the same way as werewolves, fairies or trolls, as creatures that may have existed a long time ago but don’t exist anymore.

The truth is, these characters are very genuine and present in our history and it is important for today’s children – and indeed Australians of all ages — to discover these incredible, authentic stories. Even today, the creatures that feature in I, Bunyip are feared and revered in Aboriginal communities.

These stories are part of people’s lives, the fabric of their communities and identity. We are privileged to have learnt and been given permission to share these special stories."

Sharing Skills with the community
& Industry Professionals

Erth regularly delivers puppet-making workshops for children ages 5-12. Classes are based around an existing lesson plan or can be customised to suit local conditions. We also offer specific workshops designed to enhance the experience of seeing a particular production. A wide range of age groups and skill levels can be accommodated.

Workshop examples:
  • • Make a small foam puppet with pre-prepared components. Using materials and methods supplied by Erth, simple tasks result in a quick outcome. Everyone walks away with a puppet they build themselves;
  • • Create your own puppet based on the star of the show;
  • • Make a puppet using materials found in your region. Whether weaving organic elements like grass or twigs, to assembly of recycled objects, resourcefulness and imagination are key.

On completion, the maker/performers are able to teach participants how to operate what they have made. Armed with new skills and new puppets, they can create their very own performance.

Contact Erth to discuss which options work best for you and your group.

From time to time Erth presents, or facilitates with visiting artists, masterclasses for those wishing to further their skills in puppet making and manipulation. Explore principles of design and construction covering some of the key materials and techniques that have become part of Erth’s signature practice, and learn performance and intuition skills to create authentic puppetry.
